Inside C&C
C&C Yacht – No Compromise
Innovation
Since its
formation, C&C has designed and built yachts that set the standards of
style, strength and performance by which all others are judged. The company's
remarkably long tenure as the industry leader is not by chance, but the result
of its approach to the challenge of creating an incomparable yacht. The result
of the unique C&C approach is a vessel that rewards your choice through
more enjoyable sailing in the years immediately ahead, and through superior
resale value when it is time to consider another C&C.
C&C has always
sailed close to the winds of change. When there is a better way, it becomes the
C&C way, be it the shape of a foil or the materials which form the hull.
The criterion we use is function - to make the yacht faster, more comfortable,
more manoeuvrable. The style that is C&C derives from that intense
functionality.
The process of
designing a superior yacht is evolutionary, not revolutionary. The present
generation of C&C yachts realizes the best of yacht design and construction
innovation. Through generations of custom and production yachts, C&C's have
evolved into the yachts for the 90's. A hull-form with full, powerful
aft-sections and a shallow forefoot on a long waterline. This hull powers up
quickly and controllably off the wind, yet maintains the superior tracking of
its close-hauled performance.
That form has been
integrated with new composites and a new keel concept; a lighter hull combined
with a keel whose weight is lower yields a yacht that is lighter and more
easily driven, yet stiffer due to a lower center of gravity and a higher meta-
center. The result: speed and comfort previously attainable only on much larger
yachts. The sail plan being smaller than the larger yachts it keeps pace with, results
in relatively lighter sheeting loads and easier sail handling. On the
race-course, that means bullets. On the cruising grounds, that means comfort
and easier sailing.
The interiors of the
new C&C's are unlike any yacht ever built, including our own predecessors.
Multi-cabin designs, efficient use of space and locating the most frequently
used areas mid ship, combined with light, modern materials and old world
craftsmanship yields not only a functional and comfortable interior but one previously
reserved for larger, custom yachts.
"After walking through the boat and admiring a sense of space
closer to what you find on a Baltic 40, I agree"
Lisa
Gosselin -January 1990 Yachting C&C34+ review.
As the original
and definitive creator of the racer/cruiser, C&C has always pursued the
ideal of "No Compromise". In the current generation, we've stepped
closer, with multiple models tailored to the market needs. The Plus brings you
performance cruising at its most luxurious. The R series are grand prix racing
machines, which have proven themselves on race courses throughout the world.
The XL series combines the luxurious interior accommodations of the Plus with
the high-tech materials and blazing performance of the R boats. We don't
compromise, and neither should you.
Collaboration
C&C Yachts was
created in 1969 when the country's preeminent yacht design firm merged with its
leading production and custom builders. The C&C partners were drawn
together by their recognition of the advances to be made through close
collaboration. With each successive project, they analyzed and refined both the
design and construction processes, and continually incorporated the lessons
into subsequent yachts. Then, as now, they built all of the molds for every
yacht; in addition to ensuring the quality and strength of C&C tooling,
this ability gives the designer a free hand to consolidate all the improvements
garnered from the development of the prototype yacht.
This type of collaborative
partnership between designer and builder is a capability for which many of
North America’s ‘leading-edge” companies are intensely striving; it has been
part of C&C's culture since its formation. The result is a yacht free of
the unanticipated compromises that bedevil others. A C&C yacht is built as it
was designed to be built, to the highest capabilities of one of the world's most
accomplished yacht-builders.
Today, C&C
design and engineering is performed with a sophisticated CAD system that integrates
design, development and engineering functions. Design ideas which formerly
demanded weeks and months of development time can be tested in hours. CAD drawn
actual sized templates ensure the final product parallels the design.
Electronic "mock-ups" of the interior results in optimum utilization
of the available space and assures ergonomic considerations are maximized.
Design
The conception and
creation of yachts evolves with experience and technique. C&C is a leader
in both. ''All I could think of was I
wish I had designed it" Naval Architect, Bob Perry -March 1990
Sailing.
Rob Ball, chief
designer, has been part of C&C since its formation; having seen the
construction by C&C of more than 175 of his designs and numerous other
commissions built around the world, he is one of the most experienced and
prolific yacht designers. Each design has added to his vision.
Ball is a
"No-Compromise" designer who believes he is responsible for the
well-being of those who put their trust in his work. On one hand, the
"No-Compromise" approach demands a continuing search for better
performance solutions. On the other hand Ball will not compromise either the safety
or pleasure inherent in his designs. As a result, you can count on exemplary
performance under all conditions of wind and sea.
C&C has always
kept a keen eye to racing but C&C performance goes beyond stellar racing
results to build sailing confidence no matter where or how you sail. The
present generation of C&C yachts, consistent with the IMS rule, are fast and
fair, but always stable, always predictable - a proper seakindly yacht. On all
points of sail, you'll note an ease of steering and the sense of complete
control that is refreshing in so quick a vessel, the result ofa relatively
narrow waterline beam, long sailing length plus an elliptically shaped rudder
foil some 30% larger than thought adequate on other yachts. On a C&C yacht,
you'll arrive sooner - exhilarated, rather than exhausted.
The multiple
geometry bow, common to all of the current models, results in a longer
theoretical sailing waterline; significantly increasing the hull speed. This is
but one example of C&C innovations to optimize your sailing pleasure.
Aerospace
designers used to say that a plane that looked right, was right. The visual
balance and harmony of a good design, it was said, reflected the balance and
harmony of the craft's performance. Look at a C&C yacht sensual at the
dock, but never more virile than when slicing across a quartering sea, because
C&C yachts are designed to sail and sail well. As these pages show, they're
also built with reliability, guaranteeing sailing satisfaction for years to
come.
The evolving yacht-construction
There is a tension
between the needs of the performance yacht and the needs of its crew;
performance demands that weight be minimized and correctly placed, but
historically comfort has generated ill-placed weight. Through its commitment to innovative
engineering, C&C has consistently led the industry, and has recently made
significant advances in resolving this tension.
Kevlar, pound for
pound, 5 times stronger than steel and a tensile strength many times stronger
than fiberglass, seemed an ideal route to a solution, but Its complexity had previously
limited it to custom race boats. Working in a development partnership with
DuPont, the inventors of Kevlar, C&C has devised a Kevlar hybrid. Combined with
recently developed high performance resins and production methods, this hybrid
provides a synergy which revolutionizes marine construction. Not unlike the personal
body armour which made Kevlar" famous, this "bulletproof'
state-of-the art laminate yields high strength, low weight and reliability
previously unattainable in a production yacht. But right now, the fruits of that
collaboration are found only on yachts built by C&C. At the same time,
C&C devised a method of lightening the top of its fin keel concentrating
the weight lower, down where it makes a more positive contribution to
stability. The weight saved by these two developments easily offsets the
opulent interiors and conveniences of the Plus and XL series; which are second
to none.
The strength beneath the skin
The heart of C&C
construction is the balsa-cored laminate - pioneered by C&C over 20 years
ago and improved every year since. Like the steel l-beam it emulates, its
strength far exceeds the sum of its parts. The soul of C&C construction is
the accumulated skill of C&C boat builders: an average of 12 years service
with C&C and many with over 20 years of experience in boat building. They
have no equal for skill in the industry.
The engineered
laminates of the Plus series are built up with an isophthalic (Hydrex) gelcoat,
our exclusive Kevlar hybrid, E-Glass, pre-impregnated end-grain Baltek AL-600
balsa and Hydrex® resin. Hydrex, a modified isophthalic, has higher hydrolytic
stability, toughness and is more crack resistant than conventional resins. The
layups of the R and XL series use Kevlar hybrid exclusively with Hydrex resin
on both sides of a core of Baltek AL-600 aircraft-grade balsa. All materials
are Lloyd's approved. These exclusive C&C laminate schedules result in
hulls and decks which despite significant weight reduction are stronger than conventional
glass laminates. They are not only much lighter, but stiffer, more rigid,
longer lasting and have a smoother glassier surface.
Areas of the hull
and deck where hardware will be mounted are locally strengthened. High-stress
areas under deck tracks, winches, the binnacle and cleats are reinforced with
quarter-inch plates of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy laminated in place.
Corrosion-proof, self-lubricating nylon seacocks are bolted through solid glass
and Kevlar.
The seacock's
flange is ground flush with the hull to minimize turbulence and the area is
epoxy-coated.
The spars are
designed by C&C and fabricated by Offshore Spars. This leader in custom
spars employs a CAD system which analyzes the structural engineering of each
spar design. The masthead, gooseneck and boom end are custom machined aluminum,
welded to the one-piece extrusion. You’ll find no casted assemblies or pop
rivets. The aerodynamic spreaders are secured to the mast via machined,
continuous aluminum spreader bars. They precisely fit the spreader bases and traverse
the mast and along with separate support bars carry the compression loads
exerted by the shrouds.
The keel stepped
spar rests on a massive alloy weldment built into the hull's internal spyder
framework and grounded to the keel via the keelbolts. Navtec rod rigging
terminates at the deck for ease of tuning. The chain plates are just that:
single piece quarter-inch thick plates of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy with a leak
proof deck gasket, which terminates at the same spyder framework. The stresses
of the spar, rigging, keel and engine are all counterbalanced by this Kevlar
spyder framework. The area supporting the weight of the keel is additionally
reinforced with LIasil laminated to the spyder and the hull, transferring the keel
load over a greater area.
The wood used to
build the interior - all of it - is stiff, stable and rot-resistant solid teak
or FEQ (First European Quality) teak-veneered mahogany, all matched for color
and grain. The mahogany core unlike the fir core employed by most builders is
much more warp and rot resistant. Everything is securely fastened with marine
glues and stainless steel screws exclusively. Screws that would be visible are covered
by a teak plug. All bulkheads are laminated on both sides to the hull. In most
cases, you wouldn't see where this strength has been added, but its there -
rely on it.
Note how the abundance
of light emanating from the hatches and skylights warms the tones of the teak.
The numerous opening hatches ensure ample ventilation in any climate. The
plexiglass of the hatches and companionway slide is 7/16 inch, so strong it
barely deflects when you walk on it. The plexiglass portlights are secured with
an aviation grade glue so powerful, it makes them a structural element of the
deck, guaranteeing watertight integrity.
The one-piece
molded head, located midship to minimize pitching motion, is a joy to use and
maintain. This well ventilated unit includes numerous cupboards and
non-breakable acrylic mirrors. The separate shower stall invites comparisons to
much larger yachts.
Open the integral
swim platform and ladder on the Plus and XL series boats. Note the ease with
which you gain access to the water; an important safety feature. And that the
cockpit sole aft of the helm is removable to expose the rudder quadrant to
complete inspection and adjustment from the safety and comfort of the cockpit.
The stem hatches to port and starboard open wide to gain access to stowage volume
rare in an aft-cabin boat.
The rudder post is
a large-diameter thick-walled stainless steel tube to which we weld
three-dimensional stainless webs. These support laminations over high-pressure
injected foam. The rudder tube, including its self-lubricating Delrin bearings,
is built up as an integral part of the hull laminating schedule. The supplied emergency
tiller quickly and easily attaches to the rudder post on deck at the helm and
not in an area that is inaccessible when it may most be needed.
The Barient
winches on a C&C yacht are sized larger than "necessary". Whether
you're in a close tacking duel, or just trying to achieve perfect trim without
changing position, you'll find the self tailing sheet winches right. Our custom
jam cleats hold securely, yet free quickly; since they're recessed into the
coamings, they're out of the way. Of course, all running rigging is conveniently
led aft, via the multi-stoppered cabin top winches, into the safe confines of
the ergonomically designed T- shaped cockpit (another C&C innovation).
Our boot-top
stripe is permanently molded in with the same osmosis resistant isophthalic
gelcoat that coats the entire hull. The day we spend making a triple stripe
will save you a day of repairing a taped-on stripe every year. And just in case
you need to repair a mishap, we even include cans of gelcoat from the very
batch used to build your boat.
The critically
acclaimed hull-deck joint is another legendary C&C innovation that's
stronger and more leak-resistant than ever. Stainless steel machine bolts and
nuts secure the perforated toe-rail and deck down on a three-inch-wide hull
flange. Between the toe-rail and deck and between thedeck and hull are layers
of polyurethane adhesive. The toe-rail is anodized black to match deck tracks
and hardware, and protected by a replaceable white vinyl rub rail. For structural
integrity, the Zytel® stanchion bases mount integrally to the toe-rail and are
through bolted with backing plates. Like everything else on a C&C yacht,
the molded-in non-skid on deck works: it provides a safe, comfortable grip in
any condition. Our electrical and mechanical systems are built for longevity
and user-friendliness. The hose used for both exhaust and sanitary lines is smooth
neoprene to ensure no transmission of odours and is double clamped (as are all
connections below the waterline); it exceeds Coast Guard requirements. All
electrical connections, AC or DC, are made via circuit breakers and tinned, multi-strand
copper wire in duplex or triplex outer sleeves. Hose and wire are securely
mounted against vibration with protective grommets wherever they pass through a
bulkhead or frame.
Even your comfort
benefits from our rigorous approach. Four different grades of layered foam are
used in our Plus and XL series, for sitting on, sleeping on or just giving
cushions that luxurious shape. The R-series boats are equipped with superlight
foams throughout. The fabrics we use are not only fashionable, but durable;
they are also zipped together and thus dry cleanable, should you manage to
defeat the Scotch-Guard.
A taste without compromise
Take the helm of a
C&C yacht. Get comfortable -it's easy enough, given the careful shaping of
the C&C cockpit. As you power out, notice that the sightlines are clear in
all directions. As the sails go up, your crew moves easily round the T-shaped
cockpit, hoisting and trimming effortlessly with powerful and well-placed gear.
On the wind, you track easily and, with the long waterline and multiple geometry
bow, achieve speeds appropriate to much larger yachts. Tack. You feel the bite
of the oversize rudder winding you through a stunningly short arc and the quick
acceleration to the speed of the previous tack. Note how high she points, and
when you crack off to a close reach, you find you're still sailing above the
close hauled angle of most other boats. Bearing away to a beam reach, you
expect the familiar fight with the slop left over from yesterday's storm, but
still this C&C tracks smoothly as the waves roll under the counter. You
layoff to a run, in a following sea, but still the struggle never comes, the
motion is always predictable, no pitching, no wallowing. No other boat sails as
safely, predictably or smoothly as a C&C. Handing off the helm, you go
below and immediately notice the proper placement of grabrails throughout. Here,
the motion seems as rock solid as it did on deck. You hear only the muffled
tones of the passing water, no creaks, no groans. These yachts are built as
tight as a drum. Note that the innovative appointments, which appeared
luxurious at the dock, work equally well underway.
This is but a
taste of the "No Compromise" yacht, the taste of the C&C yacht.
Inspect C&C quality, sail C&C performance, enjoy C&C comfort. We
know you'll find they exceed not only those of boats costing less, but the quality
and performance of boats costing far more. We're confident that they will
exceed even your expectations.
